Acrobat Injured At Barnstable County Fair

An acrobat was injured at the Barnstable County Fair Wednesday night when he fell off the 'Wheel of Death.'

Fire and EMS personnel were at the fair on standby and received a report at 5:44 p.m. about the accident from bystanders at the acrobat show, Falmouth Fire Deputy Chief Scott Thrasher said.

When the rescue crew went to the scene of the accident, they found the acrobat on the ground.

He had fallen from near the top of the Wheel of Death, also known as the Space Wheel, a large rotating structure with rotating wide hoops on both ends.

The acrobat was performing in one of the rotating hoops when he fell and hit the top of the other hoop before falling about 20 feet to the ground, Thrasher said.

The acrobat suffered most of his injuries from when he hit the second hoop.

The on-scene crew requested an ambulance at 5:46 p.m. and the acrobat was brought to Falmouth Hospital with multi-trauma injuries, which were potentially serious but non-life-threatening.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration and state inspectors were notified, Falmouth police Lt. Douglas DeCosta said.
