State Provides Funds for Shark Mitigation on Cape Cod

Six towns on the Outer Cape were notified Monday by State Representative Sarah Peake and Cape and Islands State Senator, Julian Cyr, that the state, through the Governor’s office, will fund $383,000 for shark mitigation. Among the items the money will be used for are satellite phones for lifeguards, first-aid equipment including stretchers and all-terrain vehicles, and emergency call boxes on the Cape’s outer beaches.

Wellfleet Town Administrator, Dan Hoort, says this is a prime example of how government should work for its citizens. He adds that the six communities met, along with the Cape Cod National Seashore, to discuss how best to address what is considered a regional issue. Hoort says the funding doesn’t solve the shark problem but it is a big first step.
